pirumandal asked:

Blackberry devices are very popular with corporate users and businesses, where they are mainly used to provide e-mail access to roaming employees. However, recently the company has introduced its low range devices to target general users like Blackberry Curve 8520. At present, BlackBerry is the world’s second most popular Smartphone platform after Nokia, capturing 21% of worldwide Smartphone sales in Q3, 2009 as compared to 16% in last year.

Being at number two, everybody loves to read about the rumors of new Blackberry devices and what will be the new features of the next BlackBerry?

New Blackberry devices

Recently, the company has released its highly anticipated Storm 2, which is the second Touchscreen Smartphone developed by the company. The Storm2 by default is SIM locked, but can be subsequently unlocked to use on any GSM network by obtaining code from respective provider.

Meanwhile, it is reported that RIM will launch about 16 new BlackBerry devices in 2010.  It seems that BlackBerry Essex will be the next in line and Blackberry 9100 aka Striker, Blackberry Curve 8530 will follow it soon.

The new devices will certainly designed in a way that they can compete with various new Smartphones from its competitors like Nokia, Apple, Samsung, Palm etc. It is assumed that the devices will have Wi-Fi support, new trackpad and Touchscreen. However, the company has neither provided any roadmap for the next year nor it detailed any of the devices.

According to sources, some of the forthcoming models of the Blackberry will have features:

1)  Blackberry Essex: The device is said to be the new version of Blackberry Tour which supports 3G, CDMA, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Also, it will have a trackpad and new applications that will certainly amuse its users.

2)  Blackberry 9100 aka Striker: It is the updated version of Blackberry Pearl, but featuring 3G and trackpad. It is reported that the device is slimmer than Blackberry 9700 or Bold 2 which will provide the phone an attractive look.

3)  Blackberry Curve 8530: Similar to Curve 8520, the new device is designed for CDMA carriers. It will be expected to announce soon.

Front-facing cameras to debut on BlackBerry in 2010

According to sources, Research in Motion is apparently planning to bring the latest iterations with front facing camera. The company is planning to tweak the design of its Blackberries and making them more useful for corporate users.

The front facing camera will be a help for video conferencing and the launch is expected by early 2010. Nokia has already its products in the market supporting the same form factors.

RIM’s new “Services Platform” for BlackBerry Developers

Last week, RIM has introduced a new services platform for developers, which will enhance various useful applications for the upcoming Blackberry devices. The new applications will streamline business processes on BlackBerry Smartphones.

The new services platform will offer advertising, payment, content push and new location services. Also, the platform will design various responsive, location-aware, revenue-generating applications, for example BlackBerry Advertising Service, BlackBerry Payment Service, BlackBerry Push Service etc. It is predicted that these applications will be available in 2010.

Alter Sage asked:

Any global telecoms provider will have experienced an increase in demand for internet access and telephone lines. Today, internet is no longer the slow, dial up and expensive luxury which it used to be. In first world countries, most households have internet access and many businesses are run entirely online. The internet and hosted exchange services has become imperative to the global economy and successful functioning of businesses. Because of the internet and easy connection with distant locations, businesses in separate countries, even continents can converse and trade as if they were located in the same street.

Thanks to the internet, business has been revolutionised, as have communication solutions. The internet has allowed businesses to expand with global branches and a need for frequent over-seas travel to these branches and to serve clients. Business trips require employees to remain in communication with them with reliable tools via calls, emails and faxes for tasks to be completed. In remote areas, this can be difficult to accomplish, especially as some of these areas do not have high quality internet. Using a satellite internet connection can be extremely costly to a business, as is making long distance calls to cellular phones and PSTN lines.

Global Roaming is a part of satellite telecoms options through the use of co-locations services to allow internet connection anywhere on the globe. Carrier services allow clients access to the internet through local voice and data services rather than connecting to the internet via an expensive, distant server. Voice and data services (hosted IP services) use a single interface to select an internet connection via Wi-Fi access points, mobile data networks and bookmarked locations available.

World-wide coverage is created via an ISP working with a space segment, carrier class telecoms network and internet backbone. The sophisticated systems are a reliable alternative to regular fibre networks which do not compromise on connection speed or strength. The systems are fully scalable and can add or subtract users easily without disrupting the connection or existing lines. Global roaming service providers will generally provide a 24 hour-a-day helpline with skilled consultants for any troubleshooting advice necessary.

Communications are extremely sophisticated as they allow for low cost communication which is a reliable and high speed alternative to regular fibre networks.

Emails, faxes, conference calls, Hosted VoIP telephony and internet browsing are now possible from any location globally. Through using co-location services, communication has never been easier. Clients have access to a user friendly interface and select their location to find the local dial up to access their world-wide broadband internet. Global roaming service providers will generally have access points and Wi-Fi hotspots in most global locations.

Business Communication with Global Roaming Solutions

A global telecoms provider should offer specialised Global Roaming as it has become a necessary solution for business communication; eliminating the problems of slow connections, poor quality lines and bad reception.

Through co-location services, a travelling employee is able to remain on their company’s communication network without hassle. Global roaming has an incredibly easy user interface and universal software, eliminating the need for time consuming training.

Hosted VoIP calls can be made cheaply through softphone technology and IP telephony without compromise of quality. Cost reduction is a large benefit of global roaming for business solutions. Due to the use of local broadband access, calls and internet use are charged at local rates instead of the exorbitant costs of internet access through a satellite connection on another continent. Employees are able to communicate with their company and have access to the company network with ease at any time without costing the company a fortune.

Global Roaming solutions are a key factor in allowing a business to function as smoothly and reliably as possible. Overseas travel has become a mandatory role for most businesses and requires that employees stay in contact with the home office. Global roaming solutions have propelled business communication to a much higher level, reducing call costs whilst delivering high quality connections. Client relationships also benefit as employees are always contactable, no matter where their locations is. Employees choosing to work from home can even benefit from Global Roaming as they can remain in contact at all times and connected to the company network.

Business communication has been revolutionised by the use of Global Roaming from a reliable global telecoms provider. The companies performing at their peak and delivering top services to their clients are the companies using global roaming solutions and IP carrier services. Co-location services are setting the standard in business as to which companies can deliver to their clients and which companies cannot.

Is Vietnam the new economic hotspot?

Linda Fisher asked:

Many experts have articulated that Vietnam is the new economic hotspot and has the potential economic growth and development China once had. Vietnam has a population of over 86 million, making it the 13th most populous country in the world; at the current growth rate it may soon reach the top 10 spot. Vietnam is a young country with an outstanding 65% of its population under the age of 30. Traditionally a rural agrarian society, the race is on for the move to the cities, like Thailand and Malaysia before it.  Vietnam has an annual GDP (nominal) per person of only $1,000, similar GDP that made China & India the world number one place for labour and outsourcing. Despite economic instability Vietnam still manages to maintain high consistent economic growth.

Vietnam has its fair shares of people in rural areas as to educated urban/city areas. This gives the best of both worlds; business labouring and industrial establishment will be beneficial aswell as quality service outsourcing and other tertiary sector businesses. They have greater population, economic growth, and more competitive GDP per capita than rival neighbours, this is the imitating competitive edge China had that made them one of the most powerful country on earth.

Vietnam jumps to first place in the 2008 annual Global Retail Development Index (GRDI), kicking India out of its 3 year top spot as the number one destination for retail investment. The progress was driven by strong GDP growth, changes to the country’s regulatory structure favouring foreign investors and increasing consumer demand for modern retail concepts. Vietnamese consumers are among the youngest in Asia, with 79 million below the age of 65 and consumer spending has increased by more than 75% between 2000 – 2007.

Regardless of the global economic crisis, Vietnam still manages to pull themselves together and implement major development plans. Vietnam is currently building their biggest highway project (US$1.5 – $2bn), the 105 km Haiphong – Hanoi Highway is of international standards and the first ever highway in Vietnam designed without residential houses on both sides. The highway is an important route to link all the cities and provinces in the Northern Key Economic Region that helps facilitate implementation of the strategic project named as “Two corridors, one  economic belt” in Vietnam – China economic cooperation (according to www.haiphong.gov.vn).

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung appointed the state-owned Vietnam Infrastructure Development and Financial Investment Joint Stock Company (VIDIFI) to construct the nation’s highway and raise financing for it aswell as other coordinative projects along the highway.  The coordinative projects consists of many major development plans such as science parks, industrial zones, new town/urban area and the Cat Hai Island industrial service trade complex located in Cat Hai island with an incredible area of 2,800ha. The estimated value of all coordinative projects is over US$4 billion. All projects lies within Vietnam’s prime locations. (www.vidifi.vn/english)

This is not where it stops, Vietnam continues to pursue further economic activities. VIDIFI is working on additional projects unrelated to the highway, projects including urban zones, tourism, office buildings, villages, and high class condominiums projects in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province. The projects will add a supplementary multibillion dollar injection to the economy. VIDIFI is currently working with British-Vietnamese entrepreneur Viet Anh Pham to encourage investments towards the projects. Mr Pham is the owner of Pham Industries and is currently managing up to US$6 billion of investments related to the proposed business plan. More information regarding the investment projects can be answered at www.vietanhpham.com, this is the direct communication access to Mr Pham in the interest of the projects.

All these progress and plans for growth could only lead to the obvious question “is Vietnam the new economic hotspot?” “Will it be the investor’s paradise?” Or is it just a temporary rocket blast that would eventual hit the ground? These are inevitable questions that needs to asked by investors and concerned parties, as for the answer only time will tell.

Phone Systems of the Future are Here

Peter Blackman asked:

reless Cellular phone system of the future will be designed to work in a home or home office. It combines the old with the new and it uses digital landline corded phones and/or cordless phones and a new Wireless Cellular phone that has three frequencies so that it will work with US or European GSM Cellular tower systems and is wi-fi compatible. some devices may be even Cell Phone Satellite compatible.

There is a base station that is wi-fi compatible, is connected to the internet and uses VOip for long distance communications. The existing landline systems in either a house or small business is disconnected from the traditional landline system but the digital corded landline phones connect to the existing phone jacks and one of the phone jacks connects to the base station. The cordless phone system also connects to the base station. The cordless phones are strategically located on either end of the house with one of them in the home office. The corded phones are used in rooms like a bedroom where the phone is used less often. On occasion the cordless phone may get lost but you will always be able to find a corded phone.

The wireless cellular phone will look for a wi-fi system and use the internet for VOip communications as a first choice but when that is not available it will seek out a wireless cellular phone tower. The Wireless cellular phone has a Cell Phone GPS chip that will transmit the phone location when the cell phone is activating a 911 call, or when trying to locate the closest cellular phone tower or when being used to locate someone in an emergency situation or when the user is trying to find their location and when the user is using the phone as a location device to find a restaurant or get directions.

This new cell phone is keyless with a touch screen, is voice activated, and comes with a special protection case that not only protects the cell phone touch screen from metal keys in your pocket but also contains a light metal plate that deflects any EMF radiation coming from the phone while the phone is located in ones pocket or purse. The Bluetooth headsets will be voice activated and they come on only when the cell phone is receiving a call or when the user is manually initiating a call.

The cell phone is a PDA or blackberry like device and is capable of sending and receiving emails, text messaging, taking pictures and uploading the pictures to the internet, and as an organizer it keeps track of appointments, is an alarm clock, is a MP3 player and will play movies and a receive and play TV programs.

One of the goals of the cell phone service providers is to come up with more reasons that the cell phone needs to be online to increase air time and therefore generate more revenues. The wi-fi to VOip feature has taken a big chunk out of the airtime usage of the cell phone so more and more devices are being added to Wireless Cell Phones to keep the air time usage at a maximum.

Most of the above features already exist in various systems and cell phones but do not exist as one system or one cell phone. In the future Phone systems will combine all of the above features and more into one system and one Wireless Cellular Phone device.

The Advantages of this futuristic phone system is it merges existing technology with new technology saving on operating cost especially long distance calling and makes the home office a more efficient work environment that you will be able to take with you where ever you go.

Importance of web content filter and Wi-Fi security

Alice Brooks asked:

At an organization the monthly sales were going down for a few months at a stretch. With just a little investigation the administrator found out that the employees of the company were more interested in “orkuting” and “twittering” in these social websites. Many were even viewing pornographic material while some were interested in shopping with eBay. To stop these indiscipline web content filters were installed, which prohibited viewing of content of certain websites. That’s what made the sales to reach peak values again. One can think of installing wifi security measure to make the system full proof.

Wi-Fi or wireless networking is being widely used as it is inexpensive and has an easy set up. For these reasons it is used in both homes and offices. If we think from the corporate level, data is extremely important and confidential. Is it safe to send it through the wireless medium? People who are using it at their homes are generally not much security conscious but IT is definitely concerned. Hence, Wi-Fi security maintenance is extremely important in order to protect it from being mishandled.

Web content filter finds a lot of utility at homes with little children. These days’ school students have become internet savvy, which has become a source of concern for the parents. While browsing websites, there is a high chance of them viewing adult content. To avoid such instances parents are now finding solace by installing a web content filter in their computers. These filter softwares are becoming more parent-friendly by the day. Parents have the facility of filtering certain categories like ‘sex’ or ‘drugs’.

But most of these web content filter software utilize Artificial Intelligence owing to which over filtration is never done. A child might be interested to know the recipe of ‘fried chicken breasts’ but due to over-blocking of adult sites he/she would not be allowed to view it. But these software’s perform a run-time content filtration, which goes through the content properly before blocking it. Parents can be rest assured that their children will never be able to by-pass the web content filter with no knowledge about the password.

Wireless networks can suffer a variety of attacks due to which Wi-Fi security is a must. Here, are some of the ways in which you can maintain security across your wireless network.

- A WIPS or Wireless Intrusion Prevention System is a great way to counter wireless attacks.

- Mac ID filtration is a method of Wi-Fi security where the administrator allows the entry of computers in its network, which contains some specific Mac IDs only.

- Smart cards, software tokens and USB token are helpful in maintaining tight Wi-Fi security. These cards and tokens can be both hardware and software, which when used with any server software will show brilliant results. A strong algorithm is formed with user entered PIN number and the card/ token internal ID code that will from time to time create a new encryption code. The server will always be in sync with the card/token.

- WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) are some of the other Wi-Fi security measures.

Install web content filter and wifi security appliances to make your internet viewing safe and enjoyable.

Wireless Hotspot- An Effective Way to Attract Business to Your Restaurant

Julie Ann Ross asked:

reless hotspot is rapidly spreading throughout the country. Restaurants, delis, cafes, and coffee shops have begun to invest in the infrastructure required to offer their customers free wireless, thus becoming internet cafes. Some restaurant owners do it because their customers have requested the service. Others look at their competition and realize that not providing free Wi-Fi might make them vulnerable within their market.

Most consumers, including your restaurant visitors, are relying upon the internet for larger portions of their lives. Some are starting businesses. Others depend on online access to communicate with their friends and family. Still others consume most of their entertainment online. Wireless hotspots draw these people in and encourage them to become loyal customers. Here are five reasons restaurants, cafes, and other eateries should integrate wireless hotspots into their facilities.

#1 – Entrepreneurs Follow Wireless Hotspots

Millions of people have created online businesses over the past decade. At the same time, a growing number of consumers are retiring their desktop computers and replacing them with laptops. This gives them instant portability. You’ll notice these entrepreneurs hunched in front of their laptops, operating their businesses. They follow wireless hotspots. It’s not unusual to see them in places that offer cafe Wi-Fi. Or, you might see them using the computers in an internet cafe. Restaurants that offer wireless hotspots quickly become favorite places for these entrepreneurs.

#2 – Wireless Hotspots Increase Sales

When cafe Wi-Fi and wireless hotspots first became popular draws, restaurants owners were concerned their sales would slump if they offered the service. They were understandably worried that people would visit their establishments, buy a low-priced item, and stay for the entire day. Many business owners discovered something entirely different occurred.

Sales increased as customers camped out and returned to the register to buy over and over. Traffic swelled as people noticed large crowds within certain facilities; restaurants owners have known for decades that popularity builds upon itself. Many who were once concerned about using wireless hotspots turned to them as a powerful marketing strategy and competitive advantage.

#3 – Improved Customer Loyalty With Wireless Hotspots

Banking institutions offer multiple products to encourage deeper customer loyalty. In effect, the more compelling reasons a customer has to stay, the less likely that a customer will migrate to a competitor. In the same manner, restaurant owners who integrate wireless hotspots into their establishments provide their customers with an additional reason to visit. Keep in mind, most people stick to their favorite places to eat and relax. By offering them multiple reasons to come, you’ll strengthen their loyalty to your business.

#4 – Free Wireless Hotspots Boost Competitiveness

Cafe Wi-Fi and wireless hotspots are gradually becoming a necessity for many coffee shops and restaurants. Without it, they are finding it more difficult to compete against the behemoths within their market. For example, in early 2008, Starbucks began offering free Wi-Fi to their customers, essentially becoming an internet cafe. McDonalds did the same. Other restaurants and coffee shops are following suit in order to remain competitive.

#5 – Wireless Hotspots Cater To the “New” Employee

Long ago, employees would arrive at the office in the early morning and remain there until evening. Many of them even took lunches at their desks. Times have changed. An increasing number of people are enjoying the convenience of telecommuting. Armed only with a laptop, they can perform their jobs from any facility that provides free Wi-Fi access. Their first choice is often coffee shops and restaurants that offer wireless hotspots. They can fulfill their job-related responsibilities while enjoying time outside the office and home.

As the economic climate grows darker, more people will likely lose their jobs. Many of them will start their own businesses which they’ll manage online. Others will simply look for places to sit and enjoy a bite or a cup of coffee. These people are likely to gravitate toward establishments that offer free Wi-Fi service. Restaurant owners who provide this benefit within their facilities may discover their traffic and sales increase as a result.

There are many reasons which should motivate restaurants to consider integrating wireless hotspots. People are spending a greater number of hours online than ever. Coax them to spend those hours within your restaurant.

Dsp and Software Defined Radio (sdr)

GAOEmbedded asked:

For Immediate Release

DSP and Software Defined Radio (SDR)

Toronto, ON, Jan. 2008 – Wireless IP connectivity greater than 50 kilometers is still an elusive creature almost impossible to capture.

Wifi and WiMAX provide the first glimpse of extended communications. However, the goal is mobile and fixed wireless IP-connectivity at distances up to 1000km. This year the communications industry prepares for the first prototypes of wireless, software based, open source, multi-slotted connectivity device, with minimum 64Kbs throughput.

Oftelsat, a leader in the pioneering of Software Defined Radio (SDR), is working together with other vendors in the United States, building the Software Designed Radio SDR1000, a software that allows computer hardware to be used as radio hardware. The SDR uses software digital signal processing, which will in the future be part of Wifi and wiMAX devices. Parallel processing makes possible more bandwidth and a higher bitrate. With advent of DSP processors almost two decades ago, computer and communications technology saw a DSP leveraged to provide sound, fax, video and telecommunications capabilities wrapped in a simple small package. Now companies such as Oftelsat are calling for more cooperation from DSP development leaders. Oftelsat acknowledges that such expertise and knowledge is not widespread and a lot of work needs to be done. People with experience in Digital Signal processing (DSP) and/or DSP programming tools (digital signal generation, filtering and demodulation of complex waveforms) as well as people with organizational and communication skills are being sought to enter the arena of this new SDR innovation. Even though tools for digital signal processing are very expensive and few companies  focus on DSP development, once the SDR proves to be workable there’s no debate on how such a tool could help in building connectivity.

Oftelsat is now building a device using short-wave (30 Mhz) multi-slotted radio systems. The radios work with digital signal processing and advanced serial modulation using soundcards, up to 128 kbs per channel over Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) . Wifi is used for space division between short-wave nodes. The device will be intelligent, meaning that it chooses the best frequencies and, using load balancing, route via the nodes with the best propagation. For the node operators this process is automatic and transparent.

We took up the plan to develop a tactical short-wave radio system for rural and remote areas, capable delivering 64 Kbsec over distances, more than 500 km as an addition to Wifi/Wimax possibilities which end at 50 km.

New Wireless Technology – Wi-fi:

| Posted in Networks |

tindestiny asked:

Wireless Technology:

About Wireless Connection:

Wireless network refers to any type of computer network that is wireless, and is commonly associated with a telecommunications network whose interconnections between nodes is implemented without the use of wires, such as a computer network.

Wireless Connectivity Types:

Wireless LAN: Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is similar to other wireless devices and uses radio instead of wires to transmit data back and forth between computers on the same network.

• Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is a commonly used wireless network in computer systems which enable connection to the internet or other machines that have Wi-Fi functionalities. Wi-Fi networks broadcast radio waves that can be picked up by Wi-Fi receivers that are attached to different computers or mobile phones.

• Fixed Wireless Data: Fixed wireless data is a type of wireless data network that can be used to connect two or more buildings together in order to extend or share the network bandwidth without physically wiring the buildings together.

? Wi-Fi Technology:

The purpose of Wi-Fi is to hide complexity by enabling wireless access to applications and data, media and streams. The main aims of Wi-Fi are:

• Enable access to information easily

• Ensure compatibility and coexistence

• Get rid of cabling and wiring

• Get rid of switches, adapters, plugs and connectors.

? Uses of Wi-Fi:

A Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PC, game console, cell phone, MP3 player or PDA can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network connected to the Internet. The coverage of one or more interconnected access points called a hotspot can comprise an area as small as a single room with wireless-opaque walls or as large as many square miles covered by overlapping access points. Wi-Fi technology has served to set up mesh networks.

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer (wireless ad-hoc network) mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode can prove useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

Many consumer devices use Wi-Fi. Amongst others, personal computers can network to each other and connect to the Internet, mobile computers can connect to the Internet from any Wi-Fi hotspot, and digital cameras can transfer images wirelessly.

WiFi Phones:

A WiFi phone is a wireless telephone that looks similar to a mobile phone but places calls via a combination of voice over IP and WiFi rather than via a cellular network. Some WiFi phones use Skype or Vonage for their voice over IP service such as current Belkin and Netgear WiFi phones. Several cellular carriers have created “Dual-mode phones” to compete with WiFi Phones, which can be easily switched between using a WiFi connection when one is available and a traditional cellular network connection when WiFi is not available.

? Advantage Sides:

It’s fast.

Wi-Fi’s latest version is many times faster than DSL or cable connections, and literally hundreds of times faster than those old dial-up connections. That’s particularly handy when you’re working on the run, on the road, or from home: If you’ve ever watched seconds tick by while watching Web pages load, you’ll appreciate the potential productivity gain.

It’s convenient.

As soon as a Wi-Fi-equipped device is within range of a base station, it’s online. With no wires, you can move your laptop computer from place to place — for instance, from your office to a conference room down the hall, without losing your network connection. When traveling, you can set up shop anyplace equipped with a Wi-Fi network: another company’s office, a hotel room, or a convention center.

It’s everywhere.

Public Wi-Fi access sites — or “hot spots” — are multiplying faster than rabbits on Viagra. They’re in bookstores, airport lounges, fast-food restaurants (including some McDonald’s and Schlotzky’s Deli outlets), and coffee shops. In addition, local merchants from Cincinnati to Athens, Ga., to Portland, Ore., are footing the bill for bigger hot spots, accessible throughout a business district or neighborhood.

? Drawbacks:

Range:

Wi-Fi networks have limited range. A typical Wi-Fi home router using 802.11b or 802.11g with a stock antenna might have a range of 32 m (120 ft) indoors and 95 m (300 ft) outdoors. Range also varies with frequency band.

Although you lose the wires, you’re still limited to the base station’s range, typically 75 to 150 feet indoors and a few hundred feet outdoors, depending on equipment, radio frequency, and obstructions.

Power drain:

Networks using early versions of Wi-Fi technology tend to quickly gobble power – a disadvantage for battery-dependent laptop users.

Security:

Here’s the downside of providing fast, easy access. Outsiders can sometimes get into your wireless networks as fast and easily as you can. Check with hardware vendors about the latest security precautions and products. The Wi-Fi Alliance currently recommends using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) technology, which both authenticates users and encrypts data.
