What is Home Wireless Networking?

Home wireless networking is just what it sounds like — a way of creating networks without any wires within your home! If this sounds exciting to you, then read on.With a home wireless network, you can create radio connections between computers that let them communicate and connect to the Internet without you having to go to all the trouble of connecting them with wires. The computers don’t even need to have a clear path for the signal, as the wireless signal can go through walls and between floors easily.Where Did It Come From? The story of wireless networking is a rather strange one. It is basically an application of a technology called frequency hopping which was, believe it or not, invented by the actress Hedy Lamarr and a musician named George Antheil, back in the 1940s. Seriously, do a web search — I promise I’m not pulling your leg here. They received a patent for their invention, which was intended to help in the war effort.  Hedy was Jewish, but had been made to hide it and socialise with Hitler as a young woman — she had to drug her husband and run away to London to escape her native Austria. The importance of what they’d done, however, wasn’t recognised until many years later. The U.S. military adopted the technique in the ’60s, using it during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Hedy never saw any money from it as the patent had expired (don’t worry, she was a film star!), but she was given a Pioneer Award by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1997, three years before her death.Wireless Network at Home. When most people talk about wireless networks, they are talking about wireless LANs (local area networks). A local area network doesn’t mean that it covers your whole neighbourhood — the ‘local area’ in question can be only one building, such as your house. So if you want wireless networking in your home, you want a home wireless LAN.Once people have wireless in their home, they always seem to act as if there’s been an absolute miracle. After years of drilling holes in the walls and running wires all over the place, suddenly seeing them gone is really amazing.Home Wireless Network Myths.Home wireless networking is expensive. Well, home wireless networking used to be expensive when it was new, but now the prices have come way down thanks to competition and mass production. There are hundreds of manufacturers of wireless equipment, with something for every budget. Your costs will depend on how many computers you want to connect and how far apart they are, but a typical family should still be able to do it for less than $100 overall. If you’re willing to leave one of the computers on whenever you’re using the other one, you could do it for as little as $20! Best of all, once you’ve spend the money, there’s nothing more to pay after that.Wireless networking your home is hard. Again, this myth is a holdover from the early days of wireless. It used to be very difficult, with you needing to fiddle endlessly with the configuration on each computer just to get the simplest things to work. Now, though, windows supports wireless out of the box, and setting it up is easier than ever. You can usually plug in what you’ve bought, put the CD in the computer and then sit back and watch it all work perfectly!A home wireless network is insecure. You might think it’s dangerous to have all your personal data floating around in the air for anyone to read. Well, if you want, it’s dead easy to enable encryption for your wireless signals. It’s already difficult for outsiders to intercept wireless signals at all, and they certainly won’t be able to decode them as well. Not Just at Home.It was home users that were quickest to adopt wireless technology, willing to pay any amount to finally be free of needing to run wires all over their house. Since then, though, the technology has started to spread to offices, universities, and all sorts of other places.Chains of coffee shops and cafes have found that their customers will stay for hours if they offer wireless Internet access, and it’s also becoming more common in hotels andairports. This means that once you set up a laptop for wireless, it becomes far more portable than it ever was before.

Location Based Services (LBS) the Next Big Thing

Oliver Lewis asked:

The term GPS, or Global Positioning System, is fairly common these days. Many people have purchased these systems for their cars to help them navigate unfamiliar routes and they are becoming more commonly used in large companies that have large fleets of cars or trucks.

But what about those people who do not own cars? Or those who have just moved to a new and unfamiliar city? With the advent of new technology, these people can now have the same type of navigation help through their cell phones.

Some higher end cell phones are equipped with GPS but this greatly increases the price. However, with the new technology and software available today, you can still determine your location by using your cell phone, even if it does not have GPS. This option helps keep the cost of cell phones low while still providing additional security and a navigation service to the user.

Traditional GPS receives information from satellites circling the earth. Cell phones can get similar location information by using software that triangulates signals broadcasted from Wi-Fi access points and cell towers. Triangulation is simply a way of determining location based on the location of other things. By knowing the location of various wi-fi networks and cell towers, algorithms can be used to determine exact locations very effectively.

Collecting this wi-fi and cell tower data requires a collaborative effort on the part of local cell phone users or companies looking to offer location based services. Cell phone users who have GPS devices can map the cellular landscape of their neighborhoods and send the information to a central server. Once the information is analyzed and processed the locations of base stations identified by cell id can be determined, and this location data served back to other mobile users. Alternatively companies can employee fleets of drivers who collect the cell id data using specialist equipment.

With the user route for example once users have downloaded the specialist software, their GPS cell phones record the locations of any cell towers or wi-fi access points they pass. No extra driving or traveling is necessary and the cell user does not have to do a thing, not even push a button. While running simple errands around town, their phone works to record these locations. They are then uploaded to a server for non GPS capable phones to determine their own position from the data.

Using this type of system of collecting the cell id data yourself avoids the need to become a member of a network such as Navizon or Skyhook which may be cost prohibitive for the smaller business. There are also open source efforts such as OpenCellID however the issue with these is that coverage may be limited, but with the right software you (the local business) can help expand the database to the benefit of being able to offer your own location based services in that area. More and more people also rave about the benefits of having navigation capabilities even though they may not own cars. They make finding your way around a crowded city much easier and less stressful.

Using a cell phone as a navigation tool is increasing in popularity and has many benefits. Not only can you find your way around any metropolitan city in the world but it gives the user some added sense of security knowing they can find their way to safety by doing a quick navigation search. Parents can also have peace of mind knowing their teenagers have instant access to maps should they get lost while driving or out with friends.

Gary Pettit asked:

Ever since iPhone hit the market, people started to become crazy about it. In fact, iPhone sales today are still going up and a lot of people are still buying it. So, just what makes iPhone so popular among a lot of people?

Well, for starters, it has a lot of capabilities that no other phone has. It has a touch screen LCD where you don’t have to fiddle with keypads anymore, and it has amazing graphics capabilities that will blow you away. The LCD itself is considered to be the largest in mobile phones and you can even clearly see movies in it without your eyes squinting to see the details of the movie or the video you are watching.

The Apple iPhone can also let you go online through WiFi internet access. Just be inside a WiFi hotspot and you will be able to surf the internet with your iPhone.

And, the best thing about the iPhone is that it has the capabilities of your iPod, which is let you listen to your favorite tunes while you are on the go.

iPhone is basically a hybrid between iPod and a mobile phone.

And, with music playing capabilities, you may want to know which website you should visit in order to download your favorite music.

To start downloading music in to your iPhone, it is always safe and legal to go for a paid website. Although you will need to pay a subscription fee in order for you to download your favorite tunes, you can be sure that your computer as well as your iPhone will be safe from malicious programs or computer viruses and spyware software. Also, you can be sure that it is a hundred percent legal as most free music download websites are P2P websites that are known to be dangerous and illegal.

For a minimum subscription fee, you will be able to download your favorite music to your iPhone safely and legally.

When looking for a website to download your music, you might want to join a download website that offers a lot of download variety. You have to make sure that they have a huge library of music files available for download. You need to remember that some people may like pop music and you may not. You have to go for a website that offers different variety of music genre, such as pop, rock, acoustic, nu-metal, emo, classical, and others.

Another important thing that you should look for is the download interface. Is it easy to understand and operate? Is it easy to navigate from file to file? Always make sure that the interface should always be simple to use in order to make the most of your download time. Also, make sure that the download speed is fast enough that it won’t take you an hour just to download a single song with a high speed internet connection. In fact, it should only take you 2 to 4 minutes or even less depending on your connection speed to download a song.

Lastly, you have to look for an after-sales customer support service in the download website you plan on getting your music for your iPhone. Technical support is important as there will be times where you may need help to troubleshoot when you are facing difficulties with your downloads as well as your iPhone.

Remember these tips and you can be sure that you will be able to find the best music download website to download your favorite tunes for your iPhone.

Roberto Sedycias asked:

Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity features started appearing on notebooks around late 1998. Today Wi-Fi notebooks are a popular choice among the tech-savvy generation. The standard of the Wi-Fi notebooks have been certified by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance. The IEEE 802.11b is the latest wireless networking specification standard for them. As per this standard, Internet at speeds of up to 11 megabits per second or Ethernet networks such as corporate LAN can be accessed with Wi-Fi notebooks.

Wi-Fi is a popular and high-end feature on notebooks. However many of us are still confused about how to get the best out of our devices. Security of them is a major concern these days. This article talks all about Wi-Fi notebooks, what to do and what not to do with your them. Following are a few safety tips for Wi-Fi notebooks.

Be careful of your sensitive online transactions when using open Wi-Fi networks:

Do not let your Wi-Fi notebook connect just anywhere. Well it`s a good idea to access internet while sipping your favorite coffee at a Wi-Fi enabled environment, but important online transactions might be tampered. Hence its best to disable the automatic connect feature of your Windows network. You can simply uncheck the box labeled “Connect when this network is in range” when you feel like getting connected.

Turn off the Wi-Fi ad hoc connections option:

A simplest way to prevent *********** attacks to Wi-Fi notebooks is to turn off the Wi-Fi client adapter when it`s not used. Remember, Microsoft Windows default Configuration allows anonymous ad hoc connections. But when disabled, it won`t allow anonymous connections anymore. The turning off of the Wi-Fi client adapter also serves another purpose; it conserves battery life of notebooks.

Disable Window`s file and printer sharing feature:

Many users especially those who work in corporate sectors often use window`s file and printer sharing feature to share printers or files while on a work or home network. But while outside, this could be dangerous as anyone who is on that particular Wi-Fi network can access the important files. But it can be easily prevented. For additional security, you just need to disable the file and printer sharing feature of your notebooks.

Firewall software is a must for Wi-Fi notebooks:

Don`t rely on the basic inbuilt firewall of your operating system. Opt for a good freeware firewall applications which provide additional protection for your notebooks.

Secure any personal, banking, or credit card details:

Don`t let the Web browser to remember personal information. You might think it`s an easier option since no one but you are using your Wi-Fi notebook. But sensitive info regarding bank transactions or credit card details can be easily retrieved if the notebook is lost or stolen. Hence, it is a good idea to use password protected software especially those that requires you to remember only one access password which doesn`t allow unauthorized access.

Keep your Wi-Fi notebook`s operating system up to date:

Just by installing the required firewall, password-protected software or any other software won`t give optimum result of protecting your Wi-Fi notebooks. You need to update your antivirus, Web browser, firewall, and other software including the Wi-Fi client applications of your notebooks on regular interval to get the best benefits.

Verify that the SSID actually represents the provider`s Wi-Fi network:

Often the user gets associated with lots of fake networks who usually falsely represent the Wi-Fi network`s related facility. Hackers use these fake networks to get access to all important info of your device. Verifying the SSID will help prevent associating with unauthorized network especially when you access the Wi-Fi network outside.
