A teacher from Northern Ireland has said that wireless technology should be removed from schools because of fears it could cause cancer or make pupils sterile later in life. Colin Kenney from Cookstown High School in Country Tyrone, called for the investigation at this year’s Association of Teachers and Lecturers’ (ATL) annual conference. He has expressed concerns in line with many other people, and has suggested that schools return to a non-wireless system until full safety checks and assessments are carried out.

Speaking at the event he said: “Have we the moral right to ignore the warnings – simply for access to a few more computers – and are our pupils going to thank us in the years to come if they have become sterile or suffer from cancer brought on by, or exacerbated by, exposure to wi-fi?”

Mr Kenney demanded long-term safety studies until it could be confirmed that the technology was safe, and called for a return to wired internet access.

He added: “As teachers, we may have to wait a little longer for the new ICT (information and communication technology) suite to become available, but at least we will be safeguarding health.”

Wi-fi technology uses radio waves, in the same way mobile phones. Many schools now use it to teach lessons. The Professional Association of Teachers has also previously called for classroom wifi networks to be halted until potential dangers are known. But wireless technology is the future of communication and in this day and age, people expect a wifi service to be provided. However concerns will always be raised, in the same way that worries over mobile phone masts still surround residents.

A BBC Panorama investigation in 2007 found that, at its peak, the radiation from a wi-fi-enabled laptop computer is three times that of a mobile phone mast. However, the Health Protection Agency has stated that a person sitting in a wifi hotspot for twelve months would be exposed to the same amount of radiation from a 20-minute mobile phone call. Despite these findings, the public is still divided over whether wifi is safe or not. But the World Health Organisation has said there is no risk from low level, long-term exposure to wi-fi.
